Once I became a mother I realised I simply had to engage with my creative expression, of which I had previously dulled down by years of self doubt and a dusting of confusion. I was rather lost in a sea of possibilities, drowning in post natal depression, it was a struggle to swim up for air. The word ‘write’ came to me in moments of stillness, but I knew that was going to be a longer and more disciplined exploration!!
Photography has been my creative lifeline – Capturing my spirited child from birth to four years old has been whole heartedly joyful. Having little faith in my abilities to start with, she has taught me to spread my wings and run alongside her (not many of my shots involve standing still). A trip to the beach always turned into a giggling and energetic shoot and I loved being behind the lens.
Flo was born a wild little spirit, strong willed and determined she doesn’t follow direction so easily. She has inner strength and confidence that seems years ahead of her age. I learnt to work with her and move swiftly, reacting to her curious little mind and fast sprints. Our shoots are exhausting, but getting the most spirited smile is always an achievement. For the shot below I had to sit in the middle of her and literally spin on my heels whilst she ran circles around me (The gist of my mothering journey so far)
I’m inspired by beautiful natural light, the rays of sunshine beaming through the trees and splashes of colour and detail. I love to capture women nurturing their children and I prefer to hide behind a tree rather than set up a pose. I capture moments in time and bring images together to tell a story. The simplest day can speak a thousand words…
